About Till

Right now, we are trying to buy a farm in mid-Norway to start a simpler life.

How we ended up here is a long story.

From Germany to Vietnam

I was born and raised in a small-town called Wilhelmshaven at the north coast of Germany. Wanting to experience the city and follow my passion for nature, I moved to Hamburg and studied Biology. Studying was not as inspiring as I hoped it to be…

Frustrated with the German education system, I decided that it is time to see the world and that Asia would be a good (and cheap) place to start.

I went to Thailand for a month and was overwhelmed by the amounts of tourists in pretty much every corner of the country. A month into that, Vietnam seemed like the place to be. And it was! I spent six months cruising through the country on an old Honda Win that I bought in Ho Chi Min City. My first ever purchased vehicle came with more freedom than I expected.

Somewhen along that time, I applied for a Master degree in Human Nutrition. Knowing that education is paid in most of the Scandinavian countries, this seemed like a smart way to accumulate some capital and continue the travels straight after that.

Despite having a few job offers in Ha Noi, Copenhagen seemed a more attractive place to be at that point in life. When the money runs low, monthly payments for students at around 800$ are too tempting.

The Denmark chapter

As my master’s degree came to an end, another year had passed. To be honest, studying was far from being my highest priority during my stay in Copenhagen.

April 2019 marks the date when I bought my first higher-level mirrorless camera. It was also the month I opened my own company. It all started with smaller photoshoots and went all the way up to content creation for several tourism boards and various companies.

Good that there was the internet to learn!

With that extra money coming in, there would be more savings for the next big and long travels and gear to produce content along the way.

By following a frugal lifestyle. I’m managing to save up around 1000$ per month (which was the goal I set in Asia). Ready for a two-year journey to South America.

While writing my thesis, I met my wonderful girlfriend Thea. She was working at Getty images at the time and was also ready for a new adventure.

Homeless in Copenhagen

The plan was to get a one-way ticket, to any country in South America. Then we would buy motorbikes or a car and take it as it comes. Maybe we would even find a place we like that much that we look for some property.

Before that, we would go to Norway and Germany to say goodbye to both our parents. The tickets to Norway were booked for March starting in 2020. Now, we all know what happened in 2020…

Long story short, we canceled our flat in Copenhagen for the day of the flight. The keys in the postbox, moving with all our luggage, we made it to the airport and eventually on the plane to Oslo where I was rejected to enter the country. The borders were closed for non-Norwegians.

We booked a flight back to our homeless situation in Copenhagen and were so lucky that we had great friends that we could rent the flat of during the coming 3 months.

Once Norway reopened, we took the first flight and moved into the family cabin on Thea’s parents.

That was peace for now.

Freedom has many faces

South America was canceled for an unknown time. The dream of being back on the road in much cheaper countries with new-won financial freedom had been shattered into.

Now we were in Norway, a country that is so expensive that it probably makes it into the top three in the world. Not the right place to live of savings.

Weirdly enough, we got quite some attention for the way we ended up in Norway. Two newspapers ended up telling our stories.

It did not stop there, we were asked to take a consultant role for 28 companies covered by the local tourism umbrella. That leveled the financial playing field for a while.

After two years of living in Norway, my definition of freedom has changed. Spending a good bit of time in the mountains and forests showed me what true freedom looks like. Your way of thinking changes if the only concerns are a place to sleep and a decent meal.

Pondering for hours on end during the vast hikes in nature, I now knew what the next adventure should be: Owning property.
In the best case, we would find an old farm for a decent price that I could restore and turn into a place where Human life and Nature are back in tune with each other.

Once that would be done we could host people and reconnect them with a peaceful way of living in and with nature.

In the end, a physical life is a good life.
